John 1:1 in the Sahidic Coptic


The Sahidic Coptic at John 1:1 reads when transliterated:

(a) Hn te.houeite ne.f.shoop ngi p.shaje (b) auw p.shaje ne.f.shoop n.nahrm p.noute (c) auw ne.u.noute pe p.shaje

This translates literally to:

(a) In the beginning existed the word (b) and the word existed in the presence of the god (c) and a god was the word

Unlike Greek, the Coptic has an indefinite article ("a") and uses it at John 1:1c.

The word ne.u.noute (or neunoute) is divided into three parts: "ne" means "was," "u", or "ou" is the Coptic indefinite article (usually "a"), and "noute" is their word for "god."

We see this elsewhere in the Coptic in words like ourwme which means "a man" or ouchime which is "a woman."

The significance of this is that Coptic is the first language into which the New Testament was translated that had both a definite and an indefinite article, and if the Coptics understood the Greek text to say "the Word was God" they would have used the definite article. They did not have to use the indefinite article unless they understood the Greek to actually say "the word was a god."

Interesting Tidbits About the King James Bible

The KJV is arguably the greatest piece of English literature ever. Let's take a look at one example: "A vertuous woman reioyceth her husband, and he shall fulfill the yeeres of his life in peace." Ecclesiasticus 26:2  What is that you say? That scripture isn't in your copy of the KJV? Why is that? It is because the original KJV of 1611 had the apocrypha(books not canonized). And as you can see, the language is a little different from your copy. Here is another example from the book of Psalms: "That men may knowe, that thou, whose name alone is IEHOVAH, art the most high ouer all the earth."Psalmes LXXXIII:18  What does this mean? It means that the King James Version Bible has been revised thru the ages to meet the demands of a changing language.

How Many Revisions?
First, there were printer errors.
  • There was the Wicked Bible which omitted "not" from 7 of the 10 Commandments.
  • The Vinegar Bible with its parable of the vinegar
  • The Unrighteous Bible where the unrighteous inherit the kingdom
  • The Ears to Ear Bible and an assortment of others
Intentional Changes:
  • 1612
  • Early editions used either "he" or "she" at Ruth 3:15
  • 1613
  • 1616
  • In fact, between 1611 and 1644 there were 182 editions
  • 1629 edition omitted the Apocrypha
  • 1638 edition by Goad, Ward, Boyse and Mead
  • 1659 William Kilburne found 20,000 errors in 6 different editions made in the 1650's
  • 1660 marginal references introduced
  • 1683 Dr.Anthony Scargood added 7,250 references
  • 1727 thousands of errors were amended by the King's Printer
  • 1762 italics extended by Therold and Paris and modernized the language
  • 1769 extensive revision by B.Blayney
  • The 1795 edition(Murderers Bible) rendered Mark 7:27 as "Let the chidren first be killed" (instead of filled).
  • Blayney's edition became standard until....
  • 1873 the Cambridge Paragraph Bible edited by Scrivener
While the 1611 edition had, "Then cometh Judas" at Matthew 26:36, today's KJV has "Then cometh Jesus". Quite a remarkable difference!

Fun with the KJV
Does anyone know that the K.J version was written in 1610.
Did you know Shakespere was 46 at the time? Connection?
Well, in Psalms 46, the 46th word is shake, from the end of the scripture, ignore Selah, count
backwards 46 words and the word is "spear".
Also, the 14th word is "will". Go to the rear and count back to words 32 and 31(14+32=46) and
get I am. Put them all together and get his signature,
"Will-I am Shake-spear.
Then check any decent encyclopedia and see where King James summoned the greatest writers
of the day to "translate" the Word.
(In all fairness to the above submission, Will probably used the Geneva Bible)

Sakae Kubo and Walter Specht on "only-begotten" and the New World Translation


I have earlier talked about Sakae Kubo and Walter Specht's book So Many Versions as to how they made a monumental blunder by parroting Walter Martin's idiotic claim that "A definite predicate noun when it precedes the verb NEVER takes an article in Greek."

They didn't stop there. They continued with the NWT's rendering of John 1:18:

"No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten god who is in the bosom position with the Father is the one that has explained him." NWT

They write: What the NWT translators have done with John 1:18 is very interesting. They could have selected two other MS readings, 'the only one' and 'the only son of God,' but they steadfastly
kept the text they were following and translated it 'the only begotten god.'"

Reply: Why on earth would you translate "the only one" which would require the text to read MONOS hEIS (which it doesn't)? I also am not aware of any manuscript that has both hUIOS (son) and QEOS (god) in this one verse, so it would be silly to translate "the only son of God."

They further write: The word for "only begotten" probably should be translated "only"

Reply: The Greek already has a word for "only," it is MONOS. In the New Testament, monogenes is used in a filial way, one that is used for offspring...see Thayers Greek Lexicon & BAGD. In fact the BAGD states that it could be analogous to prototokos (firstborn). There are about 58 proper names in Greek built on the "genes" stem, like Diogenes, which means "born of Zeus" or Hermogenes ("born of Hermes). These are names given by parents to their offspring that represents birth. (See https://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/ancient-greek) There are also words like theogenes which means "born of God." Though there are exceptions, "the word monogenes is used most basically and frequently in contexts having to do with biological offspring." Charles Lee Irons (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary)

They further write: and there is absolutely no reason for not translating theos as "God."

Reply: The NWT did. Unless Kubo and Specht are referring to capitalization...they didn't specify. The original ancient Greek mss wrote only in capitals. For instance, in the ancient uncial script, Satan is called, "OQEOSTOUAIWNOS/THE GOD OF THE AGE." Yet, most Bibles, like the NASB, HCSB, Smith & Goodspeed will not capitalize theos/god here, even though it has the definite article. In uncial script, John 1:18 is written as follows (and without spaces): QEONOUDEISEWRAKENPWPOTEMONOGENHSQEOSOWNEISTONKOLPONTOUPATROSEKEINOSEXHGHSATO. Since this is the case, the translator is left to decide what words to capitalize.

Now this brings me to their review of the New American Standard Bible where they write: "John 1:18 follows Nestle (the Greek Text of the NASB) in reading 'the only-begotten God'..." They did not deride this translation in the NASB, they didn't insist that they should have "selected two other MS readings, 'the only one' and 'the only son of God.'" They did not include that "'only begotten' probably should be translated 'only'" Why? Because the NASB is a mainstream establishment Swamp Bible. The NASB meets certain expectations and has the traditional renderings that is demanded from Establishment Christianity. It is a Bible that is "safe" for Protestants. Not necessarily more accurate...just safe.

Burned for Denying the Deity of Christ

 It [is often] perceived, that the class of people usually stigmatized as infidels are the true exemplars in practical morality, and the true benefactors of society. And Christian countries owe them a debt of
gratitude for all the reforms and improvements which have proved sueh signal blessings to society within the last few hundred years, and for their own elevation out of the groveling ignorance of barbarism into the glorious sunlight of civilization. What withering self-reproach, what shameful mortification and self-condemnation, they ought therefore to feel in view of having committed so many of them to the flames, or otherwise maltreated and killed them! For, according to the above Christian testimonies, they were the world's real benefactors; and the following list will show that those victims perished at the hands of Christians as infidel martyrs: In 1511 Herman of Ryswick was
burned for heresy; in 1546 Aonius Polearius was hung, and then burned for skepticism; in 1574 Geofroi Vallie was burned for publishing a Heretical book; In 1546 Stephen Dolet, a printer and bookseller, was burned at Paris for atheism; in 1579 Matthew Hamont had his ears cut off, and was then burned alive, in England, for denying that Christ is God; in 1583 John Lewes was burned at Norwich, England for "denying the Godhead of Christ;" in 1589 Francis Kett, a member of a college in Cambridge, Eng., was burned for holding "divers detestable opinions against Christ, our Savior;" In 1611 Bartholomew Legate was burned to ashes at Smithfleld for denying that Christ was God; in 1644 Edward Wightman was burned at Litchfield for denying the divinity of Christ; in 1619 Lucilio Vanini, an Italian, was burned for atheistical opinions; in 1574 John Gonganelle was poisoned for his infidelity by the Holy Sacrament; in 1629 Alexander Leighton had his nose slit and his ears cut off, and was imprisoned for eleven years for publishing a work against miracles. To make the matter short, without extending the list, it has been estimated that forty thousand perished at the hands of Christians in forty years for infidelity, heresy, or other opinions deemed unsound by orthodox! And Thus it will be perceived that infidelity has had its martyrs as well as Christianity; and that
Christians, in putting these men to death, were robbing the world (according to "The New-York Evangelist") of its real benefactors. Oh, shame! Christianity, where is thy blush?

BDAG Lexicon on EGW EIMI (John 8:58)


BDAG page 283d – To establish identity the formula EGW EIMI is oft. used in the gospels (corresp. to Hebr. ANI HU Dt 32:39; Is 43:10), in such a way that the predicate must be understood fr. The context: Mt 14:27; Mk 6:50; 13:6; 14:62 Lk 22:70; J 4:26; 6:20; 8:24, 28; 13:19; 18:5f and oft.; s. on EGW – In a question MHTI EGW EIMI; surely it is not I? Mt 26:22,25.

EGW in BDAG 275a – EGW EIMI it is I (in contrast to others) Mt 14:27; Lk 24:39; J 6:20; I am the man 9:9; w. strong emphasis: I am the one (i.e. the Messiah) Mk 13:6; Lk 21:8; J 8:24, 28; cp. Vs 58.

In the Name of the Father, Son & Holy Spirit


Claim: While the Bible does not use the term "Trinity," the idea is clearly there. For example, Jesus directed that people be baptized "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

Reply: As for Matthew 28:19, 20 since when is being baptized "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," supposed to be the same as saying that they are of the same substance and essence?

McClintock and Strong's Cyclopedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical Literature, though advocating the Trinity doctrine, acknowledges regarding Matthew 28:18-20: "This text, however, taken by itself, would not prove decisively either the personality of the three subjects mentioned, or their equality or divinity." (1981 reprint, Vol. X, p. 552)

Why?

Let us look at one reason.

Using a singular form of NAME does not necessarily denote singularity.

Genesis 5:2 "Male and female created he them: and blessed them, and called their NAME Adam, in the day when they were created."

Here two distinct and separate individuals are called by one NAME.

Genesis 48:6 "And thy issue, that thou begettest after them, shall be thine; they shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance." All the brothers had
different names although the text represents that by the singular, "name".

It is interesting that the NIV and NEB distributes the term by translating it "names".

Genesis 48:16: "The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a mulititude in the midst of the earth."

Did Abraham and Isaac have the same name? Clearly, the singular term here "name" is used in a distributive sense.

Mark 5:9: "Then Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘My name is Legion,’ he replied, ‘For we are many.’" In this case one name was given to a plural number of distinct demons.

The Bible clearly distinguishes between the name of the Father and the name of the Son.
Proverbs 30:4 (NIV): "Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is HIS NAME, AND THE NAME OF HIS SON? Tell me if you know!"

Revelation 14:1 (NIV): "Then I looked, and theme before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had HIS NAME AND HIS FATHER’S NAME written on their foreheads." It is quite obvious that the Father has one name and that the Son has another.

To look for anything else in Matt 28:19 also ignores the "authority" that is placed within the lexical range of ONOMA itself.

If simply mentioning the 3 together ensures triunity, then God, and the Son and the angels must be some mysterious triad, as they are mentioned together more often,

"For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works." Matthew 16:27. See also Matt 18:10,11; Matt 24:36; Mk 8:38; Mk 13:32; Luk 9:26; 12:8; Jn1:51; 1Cor 4:9, 10; 1Tim:21; Heb 1:6; Heb 2:9; 1Pet 3:22; Rev 14: 21,22.

..or even Abraham, Isaac and Jacob:

"And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them." Exodus 6:3 KJV. See also Gen 50:24; Ex 2:24; 3:6, 15,16; 4:5; 6:3, 8; 33:1; Lev 26:42; Num 32:11; Deut 1:8; 6:10; 9:5, 27; 29:13; 2Kings 13:23; Jer 33:26; etc.
