The Best Bible Versions Are The Ones You Never Heard Of

I recently added a board on Pinterest on my favorite Bible versions, and you can visit it at https://www.pinterest.com/ncbartender/my-favorite-bible-versions/

You won't find a New International Version or an English Standard Version or most any Protestant/Evangelical versions on my list. To me those Bibles are establishment "Swamp" Bibles. They are works of apologetic activism produced in response to the superior and more objective Bibles that came before them.

Among the Bibles listed are James Moffatt's Bible, Smith & Goodspeed's Bible, the New Jerusalem Bible, Ferrar Fenton's Bible, the New World Translation, the Pre-Nicene New Testament, the Eonian Life Bible New Testament and more.

So visit my Pinterest board and let me know of any suggestions you might have...or any criticisms.

  1. I recently acquired a copy of the new English bible. I haven't read it yet. What is it about this bible that you like?

    1. First, it should be pointed out that no translation is perfect. But, when Evangelical/Fundamental Christians don't like a certain Bible, it is a good indication that may be a good Bible to pick up; "Inferior translations containing obvious liberal or theological bias include the New English Bible..." John Ankerberg

Here are a few highlights when it comes to the deity of Christ:

Hebrews 1:6 "Let all God's angels pay him homage." New English Bible
John 10:33 "Claim to be a god."-New English Bible
Isaiah 9:6 "in purpose wonderful, in battle God-like...." New English Bible
Romans 9:5 "May God, supreme above all, be blessed for ever! Amen" New English Bible
Titus 2:13 "of the great God and our Saviour." New English Bible margin
Hebrews 1:8 "God is thy throne" New English Bible margin
John 1:1 "what God was, the Word was"
See also Exodus 3:14 footnote, etc
Genesis 1:2 In the beginning of creation, when God made heaven and earth, the earth was without form and void, with darkness over the face of the abyss, and a mighty wind that swept over the surface of the waters.

It maintains the staircase parallelism in John 1.

Also, it is one of the last of the modern committee to still use "Jehovah" a few times.

You must tell the Isrealites this, that it is JEHOVAH the God of their forefathers, the God of Abraham,
The God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, who has sent you to them. This is my name forever; this is my title in
every generation." The New English Bible

And there are many unique and beautiful wordings in the NEB that make it so refreshing, and the poetry in the New English Bible is often beautiful and uplifting. "Thus by your own tradition, handed down among you, you make God's word null and void." -- Mark 7:13 New English Bible

Luke 11:48 "and so [you] testify that you approve of the deeds your fathers did; they committed the murders and you provide the monuments."

Ps 131 "I submit myself, I account myself lowly, as a weaned child clinging to its mother"

Psalm 19: The heavens tell us out the glory of God,
the vault of heaven reveals his handiwork.
      One day speaks to another,
night with night shares its knowledge
and this without speech or language
      or sound off any voice.
Their music goes out through all the earth,
their words reach to the ends of the world.
In them a tent is fixed for the sun,
who comes out like a bridegroom from his wedding canopy,
rejoicing like a strong man to run his race.
His rising is at one end of the heavens,
      his circuit touches their farthest ends;
and nothing is hidden from his heat.

Genesis 3:1 "The serpent was more crafty than any wild creature that the LORD had made."

At times it is unintentionally humorous:

"The terrors of death suddenly beset him and make him piss over his feet." Job 18:11

"As she sat on the ass, she broke wind, and Caleb asked her, "What did you mean by
      that?" Joshua 15.18
