Scholar Writes Paper Arguing for the "a god" Rendering at John 1:1c

Alexander Smarius has written a paper entitled Another God in the Gospel of John? A Linguistic Analysis of John 1:1 and 1:18 in which he argues for the "a god" translation of John 1:1c.

Here is an excerpt"

"While many scholars have discussed the intricacies of the traditional translation of 1:1, far less attention has been given to an altogether different interpretation for which the Greek itself also allows. This alternative view, in which 'the Word was a god' – a distinct but completely cooperative deity close to God – has had advocates mainly outside the field of academic scholarship. Although some technical studies admit to the linguistic possibility, it is generally considered impossible within the NT context.

In this paper I argue that there is good reason to explore the linguistic plausibility of the Word as a god close to God. A new analysis of both John 1:1 and 1:18 will show that this alternative interpretation deserves more serious attention than has hitherto been acknowledged."

The Coptic Gospel of John 1:1-14

"In the beginning existed the Word, and the Word existed with God, and the Word was a God."

The Coptic Gospel of John 1:1-14, According to the Coptic text in G. Horner, The Coptic Version of the New Testament in the Southern Dialect, vol. III (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1911-1924) pp.2-4. This is posted at this link.

The Coptic was the first language into which the New Testament was translated that had both a definite and an indefinite article, and they understood the Greek theos/QEOS to be an indefinite noun at John 1:1c, which is contrary to the customary tradition of rendering the verse in English as "and the Word was God".

"True, the Coptic text is a translation of the Koine Greek text of John 1:1c , but that text also can be translated literally to say 'a god was the Word.' The Sahidic Coptic translators were translating the Greek text as they understood it, from the background of 500 years of Koine Greek influence in Egypt." ~The Sahidic Coptic Indefinite Article at John 1:1

The Bible Apocrypha on This Day in History

See also The Book of Enoch and Other Odd Bibles on DVDrom and Over 320 Forbidden and Lost Books of the Bible on DVDROM (Apocrypha)

Today in History: The final session of the Council of Trent was held on this day in 1563. A significant part of this Catholic council was the confirmation that the Deutero-canonical books (the Apocrypha/Lost Books of the Bible) was on  par with the other books of the Bible canon...and that Jerome's Latin translation, the Vulgate, was to be authoritative for the text of Scripture, contrary to Protestant views that the Greek and Hebrew texts were more authoritative.

These days though Catholics no longer use Jerome's Vulgate, opting instead for the Greek and Hebrew texts. If you're wondering what the Deutero-canonical/apocryphal books of the Bible are, you can simply compare the table of contents in a Catholic Bible with that of a Protestant one. The Catholic Bible has more books in their Bibles. For instance, a Catholic Bible will contain the books of Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, and Baruch while a Protestant Bible will not. The Protestant King James Bible actually had the apocryphal books when it first came out in 1611 (1 Esdras, 2 Esdras, Tobit, Judith, Additions to Esther, Wisdom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus, Letter of Jeremiah, Prayer of Azariah, Susanna, Bel and the Dragon, Prayer of Manasseh, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees and Baruch). The Five Gospels by the Jesus Seminar includes the Gospel of Thomas.

Some of these books can be entertaining. For instance, Bel and the Dragon was the first locked room mystery, and the Story of Susanna is the oldest court room drama. The very first translation of the Bible, the Septuagint (280 BC) contained the Apocrypha, and it is believed that the New Testament quotes from the Apocrypha in a few places. I have personally collected over 320 apocryphal Bible books.

The first translation of the Bible was the Septuagint (LXX) and it was made in the 3rd century before Christ. It had many apocryphal books, and some of the early Church Fathers accepted the apocrypha as part of the Bible canon. "They frequently paraphrased portions of the Apocrypha and even call the writer of 2 Esdras 'another of the prophets' (Epistle of Barnabas 12:1). During Origen’s day, the Apocrypha became a normal part of the liturgy in church. But by the time Augustine and Jerome came on the scene, two opposing views emerged on these writings. Augustine argued for the canonicity of the Apocrypha, drawing from it frequently in his writings. Jerome, however, pushed back and distinguished between canonical and ecclesiastical texts. Canonical texts informed faith and practice, but ecclesiastical texts were to be read in the church solely for edification, not to construct doctrine." Source

The Codex Sinaiticus on This Day in History

This Day in History: The Codex Sinaiticus was discovered in Egypt on this day in 1859. This Codex is the oldest major manuscript of the New Testament, with sections of the Old Testament as well. This was a major find in the area of Textual Criticism. Alongside the Codex Alexandrinus and Codex Vaticanus, these three set the ground for newer translations of the Bible with a move away from the later Greek text (Textus Receptus) of the King James Bible.

Constantin von Tischendorf found them in a monastery in Egypt with an interesting story. He wrote that during his first visit to the Saint Catherine's Monastery, he saw some leaves of parchment in a waste-basket. They were "rubbish which was to be destroyed by burning it in the ovens of the monastery", although this is firmly denied by the Monastery. After examination he realized that they were part of the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament), written in an early Greek uncial script. He retrieved from the basket 129 leaves in Greek which he identified as coming from a manuscript of the Septuagint. He asked if he might keep them, but at this point the attitude of the monks changed. They realized how valuable these old leaves were, and Tischendorf was permitted to take only one-third of the whole, i.e. 43 leaves.

"If you were to name one of the most important books in the world, your first choice isn’t likely to be the Codex Sinaiticus. But if you did, you’d be correct!...Handwritten in the fourth century, it also contains the oldest complete copy of the New Testament." Source

Ezra Abbot on Acts 20:28

A discussion among upwards of 250 theological inquirers by Ranley 1864
"REV. J. SUCKLING. Has anyone, Mr. Chairman, yet broached the Three heavenly Witnesses? What can the Unitarians make of that formidable and unanswerable Text ?
Chairman, The Three heavenly Witnesses have not been introduced, Mr. Suckling; though, of course, familiar to all present.
SUCKLING. Well then, I put it to the Unitarians to say, what possesses them, to deny the Trinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, so plainly made known in the New testament.
REV. H. BROOKE. I peremptorily deny, that any mention whatever is made of the incongruous Trinity in the Bible ; I also deny that any mention is made in the New testament of the so called Three heavenly Witnesses, to which Mr. Suckling so confidently alludes.
SUCKLING. Do you hear that, Mr. Chairman ?
Chairman. Yes, Sir; distinctly.
SUCKLING. Why, Sir, it is the very cornerstone of the rock of my faith! I rest my belief of the holy Trinity, on that very foundation; on that very emphatic text.
MR. S.WESLEY. Then, we shall soon make aUnitarian of you, Mr. Suckling; for, instead of rock, you will find your foundation is resting on sand, which we shall speedily wash away from under you. [Hear, hear!]
SUCKLING. My foundation, Sir, rests on God's own Word —
There are Three that bear record in heaven ; the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these Three are One".
This text is my proof, my incontestible proof, of the holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity; "which Faith, except one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt, he shall perish everlastingly!"
G. CANNING, ESQ. I hope not, Mr. Suckling ; as I can never again believe in the Trinity, be the peril what it may. Happily, no mention is made of your pagan Trinity in either the Jewish or Christian scriptures; nor does any such popish and self-contradictory text as you pretend to quote, form part or parcel of the New covenant — the Christian's special guide. I presume,
Mr. Chairman, the reason for its not having been brought forward at an earlier stage of the Discussion, arose from the general conviction among our Trinitarian friends, that the passage is spurious — an interpolation, abominable falsification of the Scriptures, not to be found in any accredited Manuscript; a gross imposition on the credulity of mankind! and I trust Mr. Suckling may be the only religious Instructor present, who attaches any importance to the heterogeneous and foolish words."

The Origin of the doctrine of the Trinity in theb Christian Church, article in The Morning Light 1883
(The attempt to trace the origin of the doctrine of the Trinity to the Jewish Writings is a failure. But when we proceed to the examination of the other probable sources of information upon this subject, viz., the mythology of ancient nations and the Works of Plato and other philosophers, we are rewarded by the discovery of an abundance of evidence. This evidence is thus referred to by Bishop Browne: "In the mythology of all ancient nations, it is plain that the number Three has been a sacred number. The triads of classical mythology {e.g. Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades; or, again, Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva in the Capitol) are well known.)

Essays in Fallacy (The fallacy in theology) by Sir Andrew MacPhail 1910 ("Paul never went so far as to elevate Jesus to an equality with God. The utmost he conceded was that he was higher than the angels. It was left for the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews to force into Christianity the Alexandrine conception that the world was created by the Son of God. That made it easy for the writer of the Fourth Gospel to declare in his prologue, 'In the beginning was the logos, and the logos was with God, and the logos was a god.'"

The Dawn of Christianity By Alfred Wilhelm Martin 1914 ("'In the beginning was the Logos and the Logos was a God,' and it 'became flesh' in order that 'God whom no man had seen at any time might be made manifest.' Not only does the Fourth Gospel root itself in a Greek idea, but it also unfolds with all the stateliness, dignity and order of a Greek tragedy."

Apologia by Edwin Abbott 1907 ("Notice how the evangelist — when he has begun his gospel by asserting the eternal pre-existence of the Logos ['In the beginning was the Logos'] — does not go on to say, as a Tritheist might do, 'and the Logos was [a] God.' No, he places first the statement 'The Logos was with God.'")
